Air Canada is leading the way in using facial recognition technology for passenger identification at Vancouver International Airport. The airline will be the first in Canada to allow passengers to verify their identities using only facial recognition, similar to unlocking a smartphone. The new Digital Identification program will be rolled out for nearly all domestic flights at YVR Airport starting December 3, 2024.
Air Canada’s Vice President of Canadian Airports and Customer Experience Strategy, Tom Stevens, emphasized that this technology will enhance the travel experience and streamline the boarding process. The airline’s digital ID technology assigns each passenger a unique faceprint, which is used to confirm their identity. This technology is available through a mobile app.
While facial recognition technology is becoming more widespread, concerns about privacy have been raised. Air Canada assures that privacy considerations have been a key focus in the development of this technology.
Currently, the digital ID option is available at Maple Leaf Lounges and the Air Canada Cafe in Toronto Pearson International Airport, with plans to expand to other Canadian airports in the near future. This move by Air Canada signals a step forward in embracing innovative technology to improve the passenger experience and streamline travel processes.
