Nebraska U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts has secured his reelection, comfortably defeating Democratic challenger Preston Love Jr. Ricketts, who was appointed to the Senate seat in 2023 after former Sen. Ben Sasse resigned, ran a successful campaign focused on issues like inflation, border security, and fiscal conservatism. He emphasized the need for tax and regulatory cuts and vowed to check the spending impulses of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Ricketts’ win over Love, a civil rights activist, signals a victory for the Republican base in Nebraska. Love ran to give Democrats a choice in the race and to boost voter turnout among communities that may have lost trust in the voting process. While Love advocated for abortion rights, Ricketts supported Initiative 434, which would ban abortion after the first trimester.
Ricketts’ win has allowed him to finish the remaining two years of Sasse’s term, and he has announced his intention to run again in 2026 for a full six-year term. He previously lost a Senate race in 2006 but has since learned from that experience. Moving forward, Ricketts plans to continue his work in the Senate by focusing on national defense, support for Israel, and strict immigration policies.
