Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old Alabama A&M football player, has passed away after suffering a head injury during a game against Alabama State on October 26. The redshirt freshman linebacker had played in seven games this season after transferring from Grambling. Burnett was pronounced dead on Wednesday, but the cause and manner of his death have not been disclosed by officials. The university initially released a statement announcing Burnett’s death but later retracted it, calling it an “unfortunate occurrence.” The athletic department stated that they were originally advised of Burnett’s death by a family member on Tuesday evening. Alabama A&M has not yet responded to requests for comment.
