Over a dozen University of Nebraska-Lincoln student photographers captured the essence of Election Day 2024 in Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue and La Vista, as more than 900,000 Nebraska voters cast their ballots. The students documented various aspects of the election process, from poll workers preparing ballots to voters casting their votes and watching the results unfold. Coordinated by Shoun Hill, the students worked through UNL College of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Nebraska News Service to capture the day’s events.
The images taken by the students captured the diversity of the democratic process, including volunteers preparing ballots, election officials guiding voters, and voters filling out their ballots at polling stations. The photos also showcased the various election night watch parties held across Nebraska, from supporters gathering at Dan Osborn’s event in La Vista to Democrats congregating at the Hilton Omaha.
Notable moments captured by the student photographers include appearances by U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts, Republican, and Democrat Preston Love Jr., who conceded the Senate race. The images also highlighted the enthusiasm of voters, the efforts of election officials, and the community engagement surrounding the electoral process.
The Nebraska Examiner, part of States Newsroom, a nonprofit news network, provided coverage of the election through the lens of student photographers, offering a unique perspective on democracy in action.
