North Korea fires suspected long-range missile ahead of U.S. election

North Korea test-fired a suspected long-range ballistic missile, believed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile, designed to strike the continental United States just days before the U.S. presidential election. The missile was launched from near Pyongyang and fell into the sea off North Korea’s east coast. Both Japan and South Korea condemned the launch as a threat to their safety and international security. The United Nations Security Council and the U.S. National Security Council also condemned the launch as a violation of resolutions and a destabilizing act in the region.

The launch comes after South Korea’s Defense Intelligence Agency warned of a possible ICBM launch by North Korea. Experts suggest that North Korea has yet to develop warheads small enough to fit on these missiles or protect them during reentry into the atmosphere. It is also believed that Russia may be providing technology to North Korea to advance its nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his South Korean counterpart condemned the deployment of North Korean soldiers to Russia for potential training in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Austin warned that their actions could have consequences and they should be mindful of the risks involved. The situation remains tense as North Korea continues to escalate its military capabilities despite international criticism and sanctions.
