Former U.S. Senator Ben Sasse is under scrutiny for directing millions into consulting contracts and high-paying positions for former GOP allies while serving as president of the University of Florida. The Independent Florida Alligator reported that Sasse hired six former staffers and two former Republican officials at salaries that exceeded comparable positions. Sasse defended the hirings, stating they were necessary for the university’s expansion projects including new satellite campuses and K-12 charter schools. He emphasized that the hirings were approved in the normal budget process and welcomed an audit.
Sasse, who became UF’s president in February 2023 and resigned in July due to his wife’s health issues, spent $17.3 million in his first year compared to his predecessor’s $5.6 million. The spending included a $4.7 million contract with consulting firm McKinsey & Company, where Sasse had previously worked. Other consulting contracts totaled about $2.5 million.
Florida officials have called for an investigation into the spending, with Governor Ron DeSantis’ office expressing concerns about the stewardship of state funds. Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis also urged the Board of Governors to look into the matter. Sasse’s response stands firm that the hirings were necessary for the university’s growth and development.
The controversy surrounding Sasse’s actions while at UF has sparked public interest and debate over the handling of state funds.
