Palestinian journalist Hassan Hamad was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his home in Gaza’s Jabalia refugee camp, increasing the total number of journalists killed in the conflict to 175. Hamad, who was only 19, had been documenting the war in Gaza for over a year and his work appeared on Al Jazeera and other networks.
Days before his death, Hamad had received threats from an Israeli officer warning him to stop filming in Gaza. Despite the warnings, Hamad continued his work and his colleagues described how he resisted in his own way by staying away from his family to protect them and went to great lengths to send out his videos.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that at least 128 journalists and media workers have been killed in the conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in over 41,000 deaths since Israel began the devastating war in October 2023. The Israeli government has not yet commented on Hamad’s death.
CPJ Program Director Carlos Martinez de la Serna stated that every time a journalist is killed or silenced, the truth is further obscured, and those responsible must be held accountable both under international law and in the eyes of history. Hamad’s death highlights the dangers faced by journalists in conflict zones and the importance of protecting press freedom.
