China and Brazil hosted a 17-member meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, aimed at rallying support behind their peace plan for the Ukraine war, which has been ongoing since February 2022. The plan emphasizes halting the expansion of the battlefield and escalating fighting, resuming direct dialogue, providing humanitarian assistance, and opposing the use of nuclear weapons. Switzerland endorsed this plan, but Ukraine insists that only its own peace plan, which focuses on restoring safety, protecting exports, and preventing escalation, is acceptable.
Russia, the aggressor in the conflict, has its own peace plan calling for Ukrainian troop withdrawal from occupied territories and renouncing NATO membership. However, this plan has been slammed by Ukraine and the US as being ultimatum-like. African leaders also proposed a peace plan with measures such as recognizing sovereignty, continuing grain exports, and releasing prisoners of war, but both sides rejected it.
India has been involved in peace efforts, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy multiple times this year. While India believes negotiations are necessary to resolve the conflict, it has not put forward its own peace plan. India’s participation in peace summits has been controversial, with disagreements on how to approach the situation in Ukraine.
Overall, the conflict stems from Russia’s desire to expand territory and control Ukraine, while Ukraine seeks to preserve sovereignty and obtain Western security guarantees. Different countries have proposed various peace plans, but reaching a compromise and finding a sustainable solution remains a challenge amidst the ongoing war.
