Hamas finds support from Iran after feeling let down by other Middle Eastern nations

Following Iran’s strikes against Israel on October 7, a senior Hamas official expressed disappointment with the lack of support from Arab neighbors. Dr. Basem Naim stated that only Iran has consistently supported the group in its resistance efforts. Despite the alleged death of Hamas’ political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, Hamas’ Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar is still alive and in control of the group, communicating with leadership and forces on the ground. Iran retaliated against Israel for Haniyeh’s death, prompting tension in the region.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Doha for talks with Qatar, accusing Israel of the assassination of Haniyeh and urging peace in Gaza. Naim emphasized that Iran acts independently based on its interests, navigating its involvement in the conflict. The elusive leader of Hamas, Sinwar, has evaded Israeli forces since the attacks, showcasing his movement in Gaza’s tunnels.

Naim also dismissed claims of the death of Al-Qassam Brigades leader Mohammed Deif, emphasizing that Palestinians are committed to the fight for freedom and dignity against occupation. He acknowledged the risks faced by Hamas leadership, including potential loss of life, in pursuit of their goals. Despite challenges, Hamas remains steadfast in its resistance against Israel’s occupation.
