A group of more than 300 national security experts, led by former Cabinet members from the Trump administration, endorsed former President Donald Trump, citing his foreign policy record and calling him “a peacemaker.” The group, organized by former Trump national security adviser Robert O’Brien and former National Security Council chief of staff Alex Gray, wrote a letter stating that “securing peace” is Trump’s legacy. The signers of the letter include prominent figures such as former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and former National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe.
The letter comes at a time of escalating conflict in the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine, with Trump recently offering to negotiate deals to resolve these conflicts. However, federal prosecutors have argued that Trump’s actions following his loss in the 2020 election are not protected by presidential immunity, accusing him and co-conspirators of illegal efforts to block Congress from certifying the election results.
Despite criticisms of Trump’s behavior, the former national security officials in the letter argue that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have failed to keep the country safe and have diminished America’s standing globally. They claim that over the last four years, peace has been disrupted by America’s emboldened adversaries. The letter also contends that Trump would be able to attract top talent to fill a new administration, despite the absence of certain key former officials who did not sign the letter.
