Comet A3, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, is currently passing through the inner Solar System, making it a must-see event for stargazers. Two viewing windows are available for those in the northern hemisphere to catch a glimpse with their naked eyes. The first window is from September 27 to October 2, before sunrise, while the second window is from October 13 to 26 in the evening.
For the best viewing experience, it is recommended to find a dark location away from city lights with a clear view of the horizon. Binoculars can enhance the viewing experience as well. The comet has already been spotted by fortunate individuals in the southern hemisphere and those aboard the International Space Station.
Discovered in January 2023, comet A3 has been dubbed the “comet of the century” by some enthusiasts due to its brightness. However, experts caution that its brightness can be unpredictable, especially as it gets closer to the Sun. The comet’s perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, is scheduled for September 27 at 5 PM.
While there is a risk of the comet disintegrating as it gets closer to the Sun, many are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to witness this celestial event. Whether it lives up to the hype of being the “comet of the century” remains to be seen, but for now, astronomers and stargazers alike are excited to catch a glimpse of this rare phenomenon.
