Donald Trump’s presidential campaign announced plans to support “universal access” to in-vitro fertilization (IVF) if the former president is re-elected. This could potentially include coverage for same-sex couples seeking fertility treatment. Trump has expressed his support for IVF, stating that either the government or insurance companies should cover the cost for all Americans who want or need it. The campaign’s press secretary emphasized Trump’s stance on state rights regarding abortion and universal access to contraception and IVF. On the other hand, Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, have been criticized for their support of abortion and forcing taxpayers to fund it.
Since Trump’s announcement about IVF, his campaign has not provided specifics on how this policy would be implemented. Trump’s remarks on IVF have surprised some of his advisors and Republican allies in Congress. The campaign’s claims regarding Democrats supporting abortion were rebutted by Harris-Walz campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz.
Trump’s vice presidential pick, JD Vance, voted against legislation to protect IVF in June. The Trump administration’s policies towards LGBTQ issues have been controversial, with efforts to limit discrimination protections. Trump’s campaign promises regarding LGBTQ issues focus on transgender people, including plans to roll back protections for transgender students if re-elected.
Currently, only a few states require IVF benefits to cover same-sex couples, with the full cost of IVF averaging around $20,000 per cycle. In New York City, a gay couple filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination due to the city’s health insurance plan not covering IVF for male couples.
