The push to change the law comes after Trump won one of Nebraska’s five electoral votes in 2016, breaking a streak of the state’s total votes going to the Republican candidate. The group behind the effort, Reform for Nebraska’s Future, argues that the current system is unfair and gives Democrats an advantage in the state.
The proposal to switch to a winner-takes-all system has faced criticism from Democrats and some Republicans, who argue that it would disenfranchise voters in districts that tend to lean Democratic. Opponents also point out that the current system allows Nebraska to have more influence in presidential elections, as candidates must pay attention to all districts in the state, not just focus on the more populous areas.
Nebraska introduced its split electoral system in 1991, becoming one of only two states to divide its Electoral College votes. The move was made to make the state more competitive in national elections and to give a voice to voters in districts that may not align with the overall state outcome.
Supporters of the change argue that Nebraska’s system is outdated and no longer serves its intended purpose. They believe that a winner-takes-all system would better reflect the will of the majority of voters in the state. The proposal will need to gain traction in the state legislature in order to move forward, but with the current political climate, it is uncertain if it will garner enough support to become a reality.
