A recent report by the Hema Committee in India’s southern state of Kerala has uncovered rampant sexual abuse and workplace violations against women in the Malayalam film industry, triggering a wave of #MeToo allegations. The report highlights issues such as denial of basic rights, casting couch practices, online harassment, and contract disputes within the industry. Calls for establishing a judicial tribunal to address complaints have emerged.
Following the report’s publication, several actresses have come forward with allegations of sexual harassment, leading to resignations within the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). The Special Investigation Team (SIT) is now conducting further investigations based on the unredacted report. Activists are pushing for the names of perpetrators to be made public and are concerned about the efficacy of a top-down tribunal system in addressing sexual misconduct cases.
While the movement has focused on naming and shaming alleged perpetrators, advocates like Nidhi Suresh emphasize the need for structural changes in how the film industry treats women. The movement aims to reshape work culture and create a safer environment for women in the industry. There are ongoing discussions on how to address these issues and implement necessary reforms to prevent further instances of sexual misconduct.
