Erik Menendez and his wife, Tammi Menendez, have criticized Netflix’s show “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” for being filled with “awful lies” and presenting a “horrible narrative” about the 1989 murder of Jose and Kitty Menendez. The series, created by Ryan Murphy as part of the “Monster” anthology, covers the lead up and aftermath of the Menendez murders. Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of the murders in 1996 and are currently serving life in prison without parole.
Tammi Menendez shared a statement from Erik Menendez on social media, expressing their disappointment in the show’s portrayal of events. They feel that the series inaccurately depicts the abuse they suffered at the hands of their father and criticizes the show for suggesting an inappropriate relationship between the brothers, which was not implied in Robert Rand’s book about the case.
The statement also questions Ryan Murphy’s intentions in creating the series, suggesting that it undermines progress in understanding childhood trauma. The Menendez family believes that violence is never a solution and hopes that the true impact of abuse on children is not overlooked in favor of sensationalized storytelling.
The show has faced backlash from viewers for its portrayal of the brothers’ relationship, but Ryan Murphy has not publicly responded to the criticism. As of now, Netflix and Murphy’s representatives have not commented on Erik Menendez’s criticism of the series.
