Iran has vehemently denied allegations by Western countries that it supplied short-range missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the new sanctions imposed by Britain, France, and Germany as “economic terrorism” against the Iranian people. In response, Iran has promised to take appropriate and proportionate actions against these European states.
France, Germany, and the United Kingdom imposed sanctions after the United States accused Iran of supplying weapons to Moscow. The measures include revoking bilateral deals for air services and imposing restrictions on Iran Air’s ability to fly to Europe. The European states also plan to designate entities and individuals involved in Iran’s ballistic missile program and weapons transfers to Russia.
However, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, stated that the claims of selling ballistic missiles to Russia are baseless and false. He dismissed the allegations as “ugly propaganda” used to divert attention from the arms support provided by the US and Western countries for the Gaza genocide.
This development comes as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused Russia of receiving ballistic missiles from Iran and potentially using them in Ukraine. He warned that the cooperation between Moscow and Tehran threatens European security. Iran, which is already heavily sanctioned, has expressed concerns about the impact of additional economic penalties on its middle class citizens. Experts have raised doubts about the effectiveness of more sanctions that may primarily harm ordinary Iranians rather than the country’s leaders.
