The Boulder Abortion Clinic, run by Dr. Warren Hern, is one of only five clinics in the country that offers second- and third-trimester abortions, sparking fierce political debate. While opponents argue that abortions after viability are too late, statistics show that only about 1% of abortions occur after 21 weeks. Dr. Hern explains that he only performs late-term abortions in extreme medical emergencies, such as when the life or health of the mother is in danger. Many of his patients come from red states with strict abortion bans, needing access to the clinic due to unforeseen circumstances like fatal fetal anomalies or sexual abuse.
One couple from Texas, Emma and Stewart, had to fly to Colorado for an abortion at 24 weeks due to a severe fetal anomaly. After the procedure, they received compassionate care from Dr. Hern’s clinic, preserving their daughter’s remains as a lasting memory. They later became parents to another child, but the experience left a permanent mark on their lives.
Another patient, Willow, faced delays and rejection at other clinics due to being five months pregnant before finding care at Dr. Hern’s clinic. With the recent overturning of Roe v. Wade and the increase in near-total abortion bans in states, situations like Willow’s are becoming more common and dangerous. Dr. Hern emphasizes that criminalizing abortion is not just a health crisis, but a national catastrophe for women.
