Indonesian fruit-pickers in UK struggle with debt due to seasonal work | Labour Rights

Indonesian workers who traveled to the UK under a seasonal worker scheme to pick fruit are facing challenges after being sacked for not meeting unrealistic targets. Abdul, who borrowed thousands of dollars to cover expenses, was let go from a farm in Hereford due to poor performance. The workers alleged that they were placed in areas with little fruit, making it impossible to meet targets. While the farm claims the dismissals were justified, the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority is investigating the case.

The workers, who were charged illegal fees for recruitment, are now struggling with debt. Some have not even been able to depart for the UK despite promises of high wages. The Indonesian Embassy in London is aware of the situation and supports investigations into illegal recruitment practices.

Labour rights activist Andy Hall blames UK companies for exploiting migrant workers and calls for proper regulation in the recruitment process. Supermarkets, seeking cheap produce, are also implicated in the issue. The workers hope for justice and fair treatment as they navigate the challenges of being in a foreign country without the financial stability they had hoped for. As investigations continue, the fate of these workers remains uncertain.
