The Zimbabwean government’s plans to revitalize the mining sector and create a $12 billion economy by 2023 rely heavily on gold mining in areas like Kwekwe. However, irresponsible mining practices have led to structural instability and safety concerns for residents. Environmental watchdogs have called for stronger regulations and monitoring to prevent further incidents.
The Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agency conducted a study revealing a complex network of illegal mining tunnels beneath Kwekwe, posing a significant risk to infrastructure and residents. Sinkholes, ground vibrations, and potential collapses are among the hazards identified.
Local authorities acknowledge the challenges posed by illegal mining and are working to enforce existing bylaws and update regulations. However, the influence of politically connected individuals, known as ‘mabosses,’ complicates efforts to curb illegal mining activities.
