Two-time football World Cup winner and Olympic gold medalist Alex Morgan has announced her retirement from professional soccer. The 35-year-old made the emotional announcement on social media, revealing that she is pregnant with her second child. Morgan, a prolific scorer for the United States national team, leaves behind a legacy that includes two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal.
Known for her advocacy for equal pay and social justice issues, Morgan has been a trailblazer on and off the field during her 15-year career with the US national team. She played a key role in the fight for equal pay, filing a complaint with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2016 and later suing US Soccer for wage discrimination. The lawsuit was settled in 2022 with both teams now receiving equal pay under collective bargaining agreements.
Throughout her career, Morgan played in 224 matches for the national team, scoring 123 goals and providing 53 assists. She was named US Soccer Player of the Year in 2012 and 2018.
