The families of American hostages held by Hamas have urged the White House to consider a unilateral deal with the terrorist organization to secure their loved ones’ release. The option is being discussed within the Biden administration, as family members and some officials doubt that Israel will commit to negotiations that include a cease-fire in Gaza. There are four American hostages believed to be alive and three others whose remains the U.S. is seeking. The Biden administration has considered negotiating a unilateral deal with Hamas in the past, but some officials strongly oppose it. The U.S. has even compiled a list of prisoners Hamas might be interested in releasing as part of an agreement to free the kidnapped Americans. However, an administration official said that a side deal with Hamas is unrealistic due to the organization’s demands, which only Israel can meet. Despite this, President Biden and the government remain committed to bringing the hostages home, either through a broader agreement involving Israel or a unilateral deal. The administration is also considering presenting a “take it or leave it” deal to Israel and Hamas, with the possibility of ending U.S.-led negotiations if both sides reject it. Biden remains optimistic about reaching a positive outcome, saying he is close to presenting a final framework for the negotiations.
