Nepal’s government has decided to lift the ban on the video-sharing app TikTok, which was imposed last November for disrupting “social harmony.” The decision was made during a cabinet meeting, with Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli directing that all social networking sites be treated equally. The previous government imposed the ban, citing the need to regulate the platform to prevent the spread of indecent materials. The government has also asked social media companies to register in Nepal, pay taxes, and abide by the country’s laws. There were discussions between the government and TikTok officials prior to the ban being lifted. TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has faced scrutiny in various countries over concerns about user data privacy. Despite TikTok denying any data-sharing with the Chinese government, countries like the United States, Britain, and New Zealand have banned the app from government phones. Nepal previously banned all pornographic sites in 2018.
