A tragic shooting at a school in Bosnia and Herzegovina has left at least three staff members dead. The shooting took place on Wednesday morning at the Sanski Most High School Center, about 200km northwest of the capital, Sarajevo. The suspect, identified as a school employee, opened fire with an automatic rifle, killing the principal, secretary, and a teacher. The suspect then attempted to take his own life but was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Authorities reported that there were no students present at the time of the shooting as schools in Bosnia are closed for the summer holiday. The teachers were reportedly meeting to prepare for the upcoming school year when the tragedy occurred. The suspect allegedly had a dispute with the school management, but police have not provided a motive for the attack.
The Balkan region has a history of armed conflict, leading to the widespread availability of small arms and weapons. However, mass shootings are rare in the region. The last school shooting in the Balkans occurred in May 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia, where a teenager killed 10 people, including nine classmates.
Police and emergency services responded quickly to the scene of the shooting in Sanski Most. The community is grieving the loss of the dedicated school employees who were victims of this senseless act of violence. The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the tragic shooting.
