Man from Kentucky sentenced to over 6 years in prison for faking death to dodge child support payments

Jesse Kipf, a Kentucky man, was sentenced to over six years in prison for hacking into state death registry systems to fake his own death in an attempt to avoid paying over $100,000 in child support. He accessed the Hawaii death registry system using a physician’s information, created a death certificate for himself, and sold access to other networks on the dark web. Kipf also had databases of personal information which he sold to international buyers. The damage caused by his actions included nearly $80,000 in repair costs and harm to individuals whose information was exposed. Kipf must serve 85% of his sentence and be supervised for three years after his release. He was indicted on multiple charges related to computer fraud and aggravated identity theft. U.S. Attorney Carlton S. Shier IV called his actions “cynical and destructive,” emphasizing the importance of cyber security. This case serves as a warning to other cyber criminals and highlights the consequences of such criminal behavior.
