A group of 50 GOP military veteran lawmakers have accused Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz of lying about his military service in the Army National Guard. The letter, signed by members of the House and Senate across the spectrum of Republicans, calls on Walz to “come clean” about his service, stating that he has violated the trust of fellow veterans. Walz has denied the accusations and pointed to support from Democratic military veteran members of Congress.
Meanwhile, polling data shows that Walz has had a smoother launch as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate compared to his Republican opponent, JD Vance. About one-third of American adults have a favorable view of Walz, compared to about one-quarter who view Vance positively. The US job market also appears weaker than previously thought, with 818,000 fewer jobs created in the twelve months to March.
Walz has also faced accusations from Vance about lying regarding his family’s experience with in vitro fertilization (IVF). Walz has characterized IVF access as a personal issue for his family, but it was clarified that they underwent a different process called intrauterine insemination (IUI) to conceive their daughter. Both Walz and Vance lack combat experience, with Walz admitting recently that he misspoke about carrying “weapons of war” in combat.
The accusations against Walz come amidst a highly contested election season where the economy is a top priority for voters. Despite the criticism, Walz continues to campaign alongside Kamala Harris in battleground states such as Wisconsin.
