Justin Simien’s four-part MGM+ documentary series, “Hollywood Black,” explores the presence of Black talent in Hollywood since the early days of the industry. Drawing inspiration from historian Donald Bogle’s book of the same name, the series delves into the historical significance of Black representation in film, highlighting the struggles and triumphs of Black actors, directors, and filmmakers.
Throughout the series, Simien engages in conversations with prominent figures in Black Hollywood, such as Ryan Coogler, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Forest Whitaker, while also introducing them to lesser-known films by Black filmmakers. The series covers a wide range of work, from blockbuster hits like “Black Panther” to independent films like “Medicine for Melancholy,” showcasing the diversity and talent within the Black filmmaking community.
Simien also explores the connections between past and present, touching on themes of representation, identity, and cultural significance in Black cinema. The series discusses the impact of stars like Richard Pryor and Dorothy Dandridge, as well as the evolution of genres like Blaxploitation and Hood Films over the decades. It also incorporates discussions about the importance of including Black LGBTQ filmmakers and representation in the industry.
Despite the challenges of getting the series made, Simien’s collaboration with Forest Whitaker’s Significant Productions brought “Hollywood Black” to MGM+, providing a platform for Black voices to be heard and celebrated. The series acts as a tribute to the rich history of Black cinema while also sparking conversations about the future of diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.
