Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández has been formally charged with committing violence against his ex-partner, former first lady Fabiola Yáñez. The charges include “minor and serious injuries, doubly aggravated” and “coercive threats.” Prosecutor Ramiro González is also requesting testimonies from key witnesses. Fernández, a left-leaning Peronist politician who was president from 2019 to 2023, denies the allegations and is promising to prove his innocence in court.
Yáñez testified before a federal court in Argentina, confirming the complaint she filed against Fernández for alleged gender violence. The charges against Fernández emerged after leaked text messages revealed the allegations in a separate embezzlement case. Fernández, accused of irregularities in awarding state insurance contracts, denies all allegations.
There have been reports of visible marks on Yáñez’s face and armpit that may be from blows, allegedly sent via message to Fernández’s former secretary. Since the accusations came to light, Fernández has not been seen outside his Buenos Aires apartment. The case has sparked controversy and intense media coverage in Argentina. Fernández’s denial of the allegations and promise to prove his innocence suggest a lengthy legal battle may be ahead.
