Elliot Page describes his first film playing a trans man, ‘Close to You,’ as ‘cathartic and healing’

Elliot Page recently starred in the film “Close to You,” his first project since coming out as transgender in December 2020. In the film, Page plays a transgender man named Sam who returns home to visit his family and reconnect with an old friend, Katherine. The film required actors to improvise as there was no written dialogue in the script. Page described the experience of making the film as one of the best he’s ever had, finding joy and catharsis in the process.

The project began with a Zoom call between Page and director Dominic Savage, exploring the idea of running into someone from the past with whom a deep connection couldn’t be fully realized. The film follows Sam as he navigates personal and family dynamics, culminating in an emotional scene with Katherine. The improvisational nature of the film allowed for long, organic takes that added depth to the characters and interactions.

Page reflected on how his journey of coming out as transgender enabled him to fully immerse himself in the character and the project, creating a sense of comfort and presence on set that he hadn’t experienced before. He highlighted poignant moments between Sam and his family, as well as the powerful scene with Katherine that resonated on a personal level. The film explores themes of acceptance, love, and self-discovery, with Page expressing gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in such a meaningful project.
