Former President Donald Trump’s campaign reported that they were hacked by an Iranian group in June, around the time Trump was set to announce his Vice Presidential nominee. The hack was revealed through leaked internal documents shared with Politico. The documents included research papers on potential running mates, including Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who was eventually chosen. The Trump campaign believes the information was obtained illegally by a hostile foreign source to interfere with the 2024 election and disrupt the democratic process. Microsoft also released a report identifying an Iranian group affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as responsible for a spear-phishing email sent to a high-ranking official on a presidential campaign. The Trump campaign spokesperson warned against media outlets reprinting the leaked documents, stating that they are aiding America’s enemies. The FBI has acknowledged the reports but has not provided further comments. The Iranian government denied any involvement in interfering with the U.S. presidential election. Politico, who received the leaked information, was told by the anonymous emailer to not inquire about the source of the documents. The situation is ongoing as investigations continue to determine the extent of the hack and the motives behind it.
