On the 10th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, protests in Ferguson, Missouri turned violent as police officer Travis Brown was critically injured outside the city’s police station. The incident left Brown with a severe brain injury after being knocked to the ground. Two other officers were also injured during the protests.
The officers were attempting to make arrests for destruction of property at the police station as protesters gathered to remember Michael Brown, who was killed by a white police officer in 2014. One suspect was charged with assault, resisting arrest, and property damage and is being held on a high bond.
Ferguson police chief Troy Doyle noted that most of the protests were peaceful, but when protesters began shaking the fence outside the station, the arrest team was sent out. Travis Brown, a Black officer who joined the department in January, was injured during the altercation.
Doyle praised Brown as an officer who wanted to make a positive impact in the community. Prosecutors have indicated that more individuals will be charged in connection with the incident.
Michael Brown’s death in 2014 sparked nationwide protests and shed light on the tense relationship between law enforcement and Black Americans. The incident also led to scrutiny of the police department and court system in Ferguson. Despite a lack of charges against the officer involved in the shooting, the community continues to grapple with issues of racial injustice and police brutality.
