Desmond Burks, who was arrested in May for fatally punching a 67-year-old driver in a road rage incident, has now been charged with first-degree murder in the death of beloved Detroit neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover. Hoover was found shot multiple times in the head in his home in April 2023. The community was shocked by the murder, with many expressing grief and frustration over the lack of arrests in the case.
Prosecutors revealed that Burks and Hoover had been in an “intimate relationship” and that Burks would charge Hoover for sexual services. Evidence such as text messages, surveillance video, and the doctor’s missing belongings led to Burks being charged in both murders. Burks was already in jail for the death of another man who he allegedly punched in a separate road rage incident.
Authorities worked extensively to gather evidence and build a case against Burks, who is being held on a $1 million bond. The motive for Hoover’s murder remains unclear. Police Chief James E. White expressed condolences to Hoover’s family and thanked them for their patience during the investigation. The case highlights the complexities of interpersonal relationships and violence in the community.
