An armed group has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on Lido beach in Mogadishu, Somalia. The attack resulted in the deaths of at least eight people and left 28 others injured. Security forces responded to the scene, killing five attackers and stopping a sixth who detonated an explosive device. The attack took place on a busy Friday night when the beach was crowded with visitors.
Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and condemned the terrorists for targeting a popular gathering spot for Somalis. Lido beach has been targeted by the al-Shabab armed group in the past, as part of their ongoing efforts to overthrow the Somali government.
Al-Shabab has been waging a violent campaign against the government for more than 17 years, carrying out bombings and attacks throughout the country. The government relies on the support of foreign troops and local armed groups to combat al-Shabab. In response to recent setbacks, Somalia has requested a delay in the withdrawal of an African peacekeeping mission.
