Just before making her Olympic debut, track and field athlete Veronica Fraley expressed concern about paying her rent on time, despite being the 2024 NCAA discus champion. She took to social media to share her frustration about not being able to cover her rent, while highlighting the disparity in financial support compared to football players at her school. Rapper Flavor Flav and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian stepped in to help by sending her funds directly, with Flavor Flav covering her rent in full and Ohanian sending $7,760 via Venmo. Fraley, a graduate student at Vanderbilt pursuing a second master’s degree in human development studies, expressed gratitude for the support and clarified that her frustration lies with rules that limit her earning potential as a collegiate athlete. She also shared a GoFundMe link for further financial support and expressed her ambitions for the 2025 World Championships and 2028 Olympics. Fraley’s post drew sympathy from internet users shocked by the financial struggles of an Olympian, and she highlighted the importance of representing Team USA well at the Games. Despite the challenges she faces, Fraley remains determined to excel in her sport and continue her track and field career beyond the Olympics.
