The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission has approved the transfer of a racing license from Hastings to a new facility in Ogallala. Hastings Exposition and Racing Inc. plans to partner with Elite Casino Resorts to establish a multi-track quarter horse racing circuit in western Nebraska. The move was unanimously approved by the commission in a 7-0 vote on Friday.
The transfer was allowed under state law as Hastings was one of the original racetrack locations in Nebraska. The move must be to a county without an existing racetrack, and in this case, the license will move from Adams County to Keith County. A market study in June determined that the move would have a positive impact.
Commissioner Shane Greckel stated that the move would provide industry growth for quarter horses, which have not yet seen significant development in Nebraska. The planned Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack in Ogallala would provide year-round entertainment and a new venue for quarter horse racing. The project aims to meet the demand for entertainment and investment in western Nebraska.
In related news, WarHorse Casino in Omaha is set to open on August 6. The gaming commission is also in the process of selecting a new executive director, with four finalists being considered. Gov. Jim Pillen will have the final approval on the commission’s pick following the August meeting.
Overall, these developments in the Nebraska racing and gaming industry signal growth and investment in the state’s entertainment sector, particularly in western Nebraska. The commission’s decisions will impact the future of horse racing and casino gambling in the region.
