Interview with Betty Gillespie of History Nebraska by Tribune

Betty Gillespie, an official from History Nebraska, recently spoke at a seminar in Fremont, Nebraska, about a new federal historic revitalization grant program. The program, funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development with $400,000 available, aims to support businesses and property owners in improving and renovating sites in the downtown historic district. Gillespie emphasized the importance of preserving historic structures by not using vinyl windows and following preservation standards.

She mentioned that the Façade Improvement Grants are part of the CDBG program, administered through HUD and distributed to states and their communities. Fremont was selected as a recipient in the last round of funding. Gillespie’s role in the program involves reviewing projects to ensure they meet preservation standards and do not negatively impact historic elements.

Gillespie shared that typical revitalization projects involve window replacements, brick repair, awnings, signage, and restoring storefronts. She stressed the significance of funding like this in preserving historic structures and ensuring they are maintained for future generations. Fremont was commended for its multiple historic districts, which include downtown and residential areas, giving the town a unique blend of history and character.

The seminar, which attracted a higher number of attendees, highlighted the community’s interest in preserving and revitalizing historic buildings. Gillespie’s expertise and contribution to the grant program were praised as a key factor in ensuring the success of historic renovation efforts in Fremont and other areas.
