A Microsoft outage on Friday led to disruptions of flights, banks, media outlets, and companies around the world, including in the Chicago area. The issue affected access to Microsoft 365 apps and services, impacting a wide range of organizations and services. While Microsoft worked to address the problem, major airlines in the U.S., including Delta, American, and United, experienced system issues and grounded flights.
In addition to airlines, other industries such as banking and media outlets were affected globally by the outage. Major airports in the UK, Australia, Germany, and the Netherlands reported delays and cancellations due to technical issues. Australian banks, airlines, and news outlets experienced shutdowns, while supermarkets faced payment system outages.
Crowdstrike, a cybersecurity company, identified a defect in a Windows update as the cause of the outage but clarified that it was not a security incident or cyberattack. Chicago airports, including O’Hare and Midway, experienced flight delays as a result of the outage, along with disruptions to Illinois State Police systems.
As the outages continued, airlines such as Delta, American, and United worked to restore flight operations, advising passengers to check for updates on their respective apps. Despite the disruptions, Microsoft reported progress in recovering its services, and organizations globally were working to address the widespread technology issues.
