Nebraska Community Blood Bank, located in Lincoln, is facing a critical shortage of O+ and O- blood types, with inventory levels dropping to their lowest point since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The shortage has been exacerbated by a recent surge in blood usage, with several massive transfusion protocols being implemented in the region, requiring large amounts of blood products to save patients’ lives.
Type O+ is the most common blood type in the US, representing nearly 40% of the population, while O- is the universal blood type often used in emergency situations. The shortage of both types locally and nationally is concerning for the healthcare system, prompting an urgent call for donors to come forward and donate.
The Nebraska Community Blood Bank is urging individuals with Type O blood to make immediate donations, emphasizing the need for support to ensure that every patient receives the necessary lifesaving care. Blood donors can give every 56 days, while platelet donors can give twice per month, and eligible individuals are encouraged to donate at least once per season to help maintain a stable blood supply.
