Israel has carried out renewed airstrikes in southern Gaza, forcing hundreds of Palestinians to flee their homes. Eight people were killed and over 30 wounded in the attacks. The strikes were in response to a rocket barrage by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) on Israeli communities near the border.
The PIJ claimed the attack was retaliation for Israeli “crimes” against Palestinians. The Israeli military reported intercepting most of the rockets and said it was striking the sources of the fire. Following the attacks, sections of Khan Younis, including the city itself, were ordered to evacuate, sparking fear among residents of a possible Israeli invasion.
Residents expressed fear and anxiety as they fled their homes, with many already displaced multiple times due to ongoing conflict. The situation in Gaza is dire, with the breakdown of public order and ongoing fighting hindering the delivery of humanitarian aid, leading to widespread hunger and fears of famine.
The recent violence is part of a longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups, including Hamas and the PIJ, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. The situation in Gaza remains tense, with the threat of further violence looming and residents facing increasing hardship due to the ongoing turmoil.
