National Democrats are investing in helping the Nebraska Democratic Party reach voters in the state’s 2nd Congressional District, which is described as the purplest district in a red-led state. The Democratic National Committee announced a $40,000 investment to fund a political staffer who will work with national, state, and local Democrats in Nebraska. Jane Kleeb, the chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party, also raised $40,000 locally to support the same staffer, who will assist with legislative elections in rural Nebraska.
The DNC’s investment is part of a larger effort to rebuild the Democratic Party in rural states, with over $510,000 spent in Nebraska this cycle alone. DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison has described this as a 50-state strategy to combat single-party GOP rule in rural states. The new political organizer will focus on helping Democratic State Sen. Tony Vargas in the 2nd District House race and supporting President Joe Biden’s bid against former President Donald Trump.
Nebraska, like Maine, awards an electoral vote based on the winner of each congressional district’s popular vote. Republicans in Nebraska are seeking to shift to a winner-take-all method that would benefit Trump, while Democrats in Maine are considering a similar move to benefit Biden. Both the Biden and Trump campaigns have also started adding staff in the state. The Nebraska Democratic Party’s efforts are aimed at mobilizing Democratic voters in local and state races, particularly in rural areas where Democrats are often down the ballot.
