A new group formed by Gov. Jim Pillen, called We Are Nebraska, spent nearly $100,000 to support four Republican legislative candidates during the May primary. Sarah Pillen, the governor’s daughter, is the group’s organizer and treasurer. The group raised $257,500 and spent $97,623 to support legislative incumbents, including two appointed by the governor. This spending occurred in the last two weeks before the primary.
Political scientist Paul Landow noted that We Are Nebraska’s activities reflect the weakening of political parties in Nebraska and nationally. While traditionally candidates relied on parties for support, wealthy elites are now stepping in to provide funding for candidates aligned with their personal agendas.
Governor Jim Pillen’s spokesperson confirmed that the PAC was established to support conservative candidates for the Nebraska Legislature in line with his agenda focusing on kids, taxes, ag, and values. Wealthy individuals like former Governor Pete Ricketts and the Peed family have also been significant donors to political candidates in the state. These donors are filling a void left by political parties that have seen a decrease in funding and support for candidates.
The rise of groups like We Are Nebraska signals a shift in how political campaigns are funded and supported in Nebraska, with wealthy individuals playing an increasingly influential role. This trend could continue as more donors seek to support candidates who align with their beliefs and priorities.
