Seven individuals, believed to be Hispanic, were shot and injured by a Nebraska man who told them to “go back to where they came from” and “speak English.” The incident, which occurred in Crete, Nebraska, on June 28th, left four children and three adults wounded, with the shooter, 74-year-old Billy Booth, later taking his own life. Booth fired at his neighbors before fatally shooting himself. Police found all the victims outside the residence with gunshot wounds, and none of the injuries were life-threatening. While some victims have been treated and released, others remain in medical care.
Authorities revealed that the rounds fired by Booth all originated from inside his house and that there was no verbal contact between him and the victims before the shooting. Past issues between Booth and the victims included disputes over parking and other nuisances. Reports indicated that Booth had previously told them to go back to where they came from and to speak English. Crete Police had received complaints about neighborhood disturbances linked to Booth prior to the incident.
A friend of one of the victims, Joshua Morales, suggested that the attack was racially motivated, citing earlier incidents involving Booth and the victims’ family. The police are currently investigating the motive behind the shooting. The neighborhood has expressed shock and concern over the tragic event, which has underscored the need for addressing racial biases and promoting tolerance and understanding in communities.
