Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed shock and disappointment at a recent survey conducted by German state broadcaster ARD, in which participants were asked if they would prefer to see more white players on the national soccer team. Nagelsmann, along with midfielder Joshua Kimmich, criticized the survey as racist and emphasized the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the sport.
Nagelsmann highlighted the need for awareness and empathy towards migrants and refugees in Europe, urging for a more open-minded approach towards cultural exchange. He emphasized the role of a soccer team as a platform for unity and collaboration among individuals of different backgrounds, religions, and skin colors.
The coach affirmed his support for his diverse squad, which includes players of Black descent, stating that all players are invited to represent their country and contribute their best to the team. Nagelsmann emphasized that the European Championship should be an opportunity for all players, regardless of their background, to showcase their skills on the field.
Germany is set to play Ukraine in their first warm-up game for Euro 2024, with additional friendlies scheduled against Greece and Scotland. As the host nation, Germany will kick off the tournament on June 14 against Scotland in Munich. The team’s lineup for the upcoming matches reflects a commitment to inclusivity and diversity on the field.
