Former Nebraska women’s basketball player Ashley Scoggin has filed a civil lawsuit against the university, head coach Amy Williams, and athletic director Trev Alberts over a sex scandal involving her and assistant coach Chuck Love. Scoggin alleges that Love groomed her into a sexual relationship and that she feared retaliation if she refused. The relationship was revealed at a team hotel before a game in February 2022 when players used a secret camera to confirm Scoggin’s presence in Love’s room. Scoggin was dismissed from the team on the same day Love was suspended with pay. The lawsuit accuses Williams and Alberts of not setting rules prohibiting staff members from having relationships with athletes. Scoggin was not informed of her rights under Title IX and was dismissed, while Williams was accused of not properly addressing the situation. The university has stated that it does not agree with the allegations and intends to vigorously defend the matter. Scoggin now plays at UNLV. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for the violation of her civil rights and highlights the issue of predatory coaches pursuing relationships with student-athletes. This case sheds light on the imbalance of power between coaches and student-athletes and the need for universities to prevent and address such situations correctly.
