Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, a group pushing to legalize medical marijuana in the state, is facing a tight deadline to collect 12,000 more signatures from registered voters in order to qualify two ballot measures for November’s general election. The group needs at least 87,000 verified voter signatures for each petition to appear on the ballot. Crista Eggers, the group’s statewide campaign coordinator, made a plea for signatures to help patients like her 8-year-old son who suffers from uncontrolled seizures.
Eggers urged Nebraskans to sign the petitions at various locations, including wine, beer, and spirits stores, in the days leading up to the Wednesday deadline. The ballot initiatives aim to protect doctors and patients who use cannabis for medical purposes, as well as allow for the production and distribution of medical marijuana.
If the group is successful in collecting the necessary signatures, the initiatives will go before voters in November. This effort comes after a previous attempt fell short in 2022. Other ballot campaigns facing deadlines include proposals on abortion, taxes, and paid sick leave.
Organizers are hopeful that with a final push, they will be able to gather the required number of signatures to move forward with legalizing medical marijuana in Nebraska. If successful, the initiatives could have a significant impact on patients in the state who rely on cannabis for medical treatment.
