Red Cross convoy in Sudan attacked, leaving at least two dead and seven injured | Conflict News

An attack on a humanitarian convoy of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Sudanese capital has resulted in two deaths and seven injuries. The ICRC convoy was evacuating civilians, including foreign nationals, from St Mary’s Church in Khartoum, and was coordinating the evacuation with the parties to the conflict, who had provided necessary security guarantees. Both the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have accused each other of being responsible for the attack. Since April, the army and the RSF have been involved in a conflict over a political transition, leading to waves of ethnic killings in Darfur. In a recent meeting, the leaders of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) announced that Burhan and Dagalo had agreed to an unconditional ceasefire and resolution of the conflict through political dialogue, and to hold a one-to-one meeting shortly. Both parties are expected to meet within 15 days to pave the way for a series of confidence-building measures and political talks to end the conflict in Sudan. The United Nations estimates that more than 12,000 people have been killed, and nearly 6.8 million have been forced to flee their homes as a result of the conflict. The armed conflict and event data project estimates an even higher death toll.
