Israeli Military Launches Gaza Strikes Following US Veto of UN Cease-fire Resolution: Latest Developments

More than 17,700 Palestian people have died in Gaza as a result of the Israel-Hamas war. Israel continued to bombard the Gaza Strip on Saturday, striking areas where forces previously told Palestinians to evacuate. The US stood against an historic U.N. resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire. Hamas’ attack in southern Israel on October 7 left 1,200 dead, including most civilians. Yemeni Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, threatened to block ships headed to Israeli ports while passing through the Red and Arabian seas until food and medicine can be delivered to Gaza. The US has opposed an open-ended cease-fire, basing concerns that it would allow Hamas to continue fighting against Israel despite the fact that more than two-thirds of the dead are women and children. Israeli officials requested $106 million worth of nearly 14,000 Army tank rounds from the US. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the U.N. Security Council should be reformed after the US vetoed a cease-fire resolution. Blinken, the US Secretary of State, met with Middle East leaders on support for Israel and the urgency of humanitarian needs in Gaza. Pressure is building on Ivy League universities and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology following a congressional hearing on the rise of antisemitism on U.S. campuses.
