Antonio Guterres, UN Chief, Continues to Advocate for Ceasefire in Gaza: ‘I Remain Committed’ | Global News

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is not giving up his appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, despite the recent veto by the United States of a proposed UN Security Council demand for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas. Speaking at the Doha Forum conference, Guterres stated that the war has undermined the credibility and authority of the Security Council, but he will not give up his appeal for a ceasefire.

Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, also announced that Doha will continue to pressure Israel and Hamas for a truce, although the chances of success are narrowing. Qatar has been leading negotiations between the two parties.

The head of UNRWA, the UN aid agency for Palestinians, Philippe Lazzarini, emphasized the need for a humanitarian ceasefire to end the suffering in Gaza. He stated that the dehumanization of Palestinians has allowed the international community to tolerate Israel’s continued attacks on Gaza.

Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, accused Israel of implementing a systematic policy of pushing Palestinians out of Gaza and creating an “amount of hatred” that will haunt the region and define generations to come.

Despite the setback of the veto and the perceived diminishing chances of a truce, Guterres and other leaders remain committed to pressuring the parties involved in the Israel-Hamas war to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire in order to prevent further suffering and devastation in Gaza.
