Memorial Service Honors Rosalynn Carter with Tribute from Husband, Jimmy, and Fellow First Ladies

Rosalynn Carter’s journey took her from rural Georgia to the White House and around the world, and culminated in a memorial service held in her home state of Georgia after her passing at the age of 96. Presidents, first ladies, governors, and senators paid their respects, but the only ones who spoke at the service were Mrs. Carter’s pastors, family, and friends. President Jimmy Carter, who emerged from hospice care for the occasion, listened as his grandsons shared memories and heartfelt tributes to their grandmother.

The service highlighted Mrs. Carter’s legacy as a trailblazing first lady and caregiver for the world’s most vulnerable. Her life was remarkable, and her tireless dedication to others was a common theme throughout the service. Family members and friends shared stories that illustrated Rosalynn Carter’s genuine and warm-hearted nature, her adventurous spirit, and her commitment to others, notably in the realm of mental health services and philanthropy.

In attendance were President Biden, former President Bill Clinton, all five living first ladies, and other prominent figures, who sat respectfully in the front row and listened to the tributes in silence. The ceremony was a testament to Mrs. Carter’s simple but elegant taste.

After the service, Rosalynn Carter was laid to rest in Plains, Georgia, where she will be buried at the Carter Home and Garden, near her family ranch. President Carter plans to be laid to rest next to her.

Throughout the service, one sentiment was clear: Rosalynn Carter was made for the long journeys of life, and the impact of her legacy has made a lasting difference in the world.
